About

Kristen Finlay is an Australian artist based in Coffs Harbour, NSW.

My work begins with observation — familiar objects, plants, interiors and moments of colour that make me stop and look.

Some paintings remain closely connected to the observed subject, while others become increasingly abstracted through colour, shape and space.

Working in layers of oil paint, I build, scrape back and adjust the surface until the original observation becomes something more distilled — a response to the feeling of what I saw rather than a record of it.
